5 Image Optimization Techniques for Web Performance

Images are the heaviest part of a webpage. Learn how to compress, resize, and format them to boost your Core Web Vitals and SEO.

If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, over half of your visitors will leave. And in 99% of cases, the culprit isn't your server or your code—it's your images. Large, unoptimized images destroy your Core Web Vitals and ruin your SEO ranking. Here are 5 techniques to fix that.

1. Compress Without Losing Quality

Many developers export images at 100% quality, resulting in 5MB files. The truth is, the human eye can barely tell the difference between 100% and 80% quality JPEG. By compressing your images, you can reduce the file size by 70% without any visible quality loss.

💡 Use our Image Compressor to reduce your images directly in your browser.

2. Use the Modern WEBP Format

JPG and PNG are old formats. WEBP is the modern standard supported by all major browsers. WEBP provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. On average, WEBP files are 25-35% smaller than their JPEG equivalents.

3. Resize for Responsive Design

There is no point in serving a 4000x3000 pixel image to a mobile phone screen. You should always resize your images to the maximum display size required by your layout. If your blog container is 800px wide, your images should be 800px wide too, not 4000px.

💡 Crop and resize perfectly for Instagram or YouTube thumbnails using our Image Resizer.

4. Use the "loading=lazy" Attribute

When a user opens your page, the browser downloads every single image at once. By adding loading="lazy" to your <img> tags, you tell the browser to only download images when the user scrolls down to them. This dramatically improves the initial page load time.

5. Measure Your Core Web Vitals

Once you've optimized your images, you need to measure the impact. Google uses Core Web Vitals (like LCP - Largest Contentful Paint) to rank your site. LCP is heavily dependent on how fast your main image loads.
